Root Canal

What Should I Expect After Receiving My Root Canal?

  • Your anesthesia will wear off in approximately 1 to 3 hours after the procedure. Avoid chewing and hot drinks until the numbness has subsided so as not to accidentally burn or bite your tongue or lips.
  • It is normal to feel discomfort for several days after your root canal treatment. To reduce swelling and pain use over the counter Ibuprofen, which will help the inflammation.
  • If antibiotics are recommended by the doctor treating you, please follow the course to its end; even if you feel no pain or swelling.
  • Root canal treatment often requires two or more appointments. This will be determined by your doctor at the time of treatment.
  • When all of the root canal appointments have been completed, it is essential to follow-up with a crown on your tooth.
  • Once the anesthesia has worn off, if you feel as though your teeth are not coming together because of your tooth’s restoration, please let our office know immediately. This situation can quickly and easily be adjusted.
  • Temporary fillings may be placed before your root canal is complete. With a temporary filling your tooth will feel different, as though it is “ditching out”. Your tooth will feel better and become stronger after receiving the permanent filling or crown.
  • We understand that different questions may arise after treatment. It is our intention to keep you as informed and as comfortable as possible. Please call our office with any questions or concerns that you may have.
